Synopsis
Je’vida, a reserved old woman, returns to her childhood home in Lapland with her niece Sanna after her sister’s death to empty the house, soon to be sold and torn down. Upon finding the traditional headdress of an indigenous Skolt Sámi wife, the house starts to speak to her. Suppressed, painful and shameful, memories return. As a child she had been forced to change her name and live her life as Iida, far away from where she belonged, apart from the people who spoke her mother tongue. In school she learned how to speak, read and write in Finnish, but the main teaching was to deny and be ashamed of herself. Iida had given up and lost interest in her heritage, but her memories connect her with the uprooted child and she goes through an internal transformation.
