MILESTONES



1987

PPB Group and Golden Harvest (Int.) Ltd of Hong Kong jointly established Golden Communications (M) Sdn Bhd to operate a chain of cinemas in Malaysia which were leased from Shaw Brothers (M) Sdn Bhd – a pioneer in Malaysian film industry.
 

1997

Golden Communications (M) Sdn Bhd merged with Cathay Organisation (M) Sdn Bhd to become the biggest company in the Malaysian cinema entertainment business. Golden Screen Cinemas Sdn Bhd (GSC) was established as a result of this merger.
 

1998

GSC launched its official website – www.gsc.com.my
 

1999

Opening of GSC Mid Valley at Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur. GSC Mid Valley is Asia’s largest multiplex with 18 screens. The Gold Class auditorium was introduced to the Malaysian market. International Screens which is dedicated to arthouse, award winning, non-mainstream and foreign language films was launched for the first time in Malaysia.
 

2001

Glitters, GSC’s merchandising outlet retailing movie related and gift items opened in GSC Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur.
 

2002

GSC Distribution (currently GSC Movies) became the first film distributor to go into a joint venture with Sistem Televisyen Malaysia (TV3) to supply Chinese feature films for a special TV belt – Pearl Screen – which aired weekly on Monday nights.
 

2004

Launched the first Premiere Hall with the opening of 12-screen GSC Gurney Plaza, Penang. GSC Gurney Plaza won Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (Malaysian Institute of Architects) award for Best Interior Design – Entertainment Category.
Glitters, GSC’s merchandising retailing company expanded into F&B and opened its first outlet in GSC Gurney Plaza Penang.
eCinemas (Electronic Cinemas) was introduced in GSC Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur to provide local directors an alternative and cheaper platform to showcase their movies.
 

2005

Opening of GSC’s first 13-screen cinema at 1 Utama Shopping Mall, Petaling Jaya.
 

2006

E-payment facility was launched for online ticketing sales with ticketing kiosks set up at GSC 1 Utama, Petaling Jaya and GSC Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur.
 

2007

GSC Signature, Malaysia’s first boutique cinema opened its doors to discerning movie-going public. This boutique cinema is located at the upmarket mall – The Gardens – located in Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur. It features two luxurious Gold Class and five Premiere Class auditoriums with three F&B outlets. GSC celebrated its 20th Anniversary.
 

2008

Malaysia’s first 3D live action movie “Journey to the Centre of the Earth” distributed by GSC Distribution (currently GSC Movies) was screened in GSC Mid Valley.
 

2009

A co-branded credit card with EON Bank – GSC EON Bank Credit Card (now known as GSC Hong Leong Credit Card) – also positioned as the “Ultimate Movie Card” was launched in May. The 13-screen GSC Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, located in the hub of Kuala Lumpur’s commercial and retail district, won the latest Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia’s (Malaysian Institute of Architects) 2009 Award for Best Interior Design – Entertainment Category.
 

2010

GSC organized major CSR project – 2010 GSC 100Plus Treasure Hunt in October and raised RM150,000 for Hospis Malaysia.
GSC WAP mobile was launched in July, which enables GSC showtimes to be viewed via the handphone.
GSC Maxx, the largest digital hall with 555 seats located at the 10th floor Berjaya Times Square opened for business Nov 25, 2010.
GSC Distribution (currently GSC Movies) embarked on its first co-production of first local Chinese Movie – Lelio Poh Poh.
 

2011

GSC Mobile App (iphone) which extends mobile ticketing to the iPhone was launched on May 10 and the Android version was launched on Nov 17. The application enables mobile ticketing across all telcos and payment gateway through Maybank’s m2u mobile and PayPal (for iPhone and Android) and RHB’s “RHB Now” (for Android only).
SelfPrint tickets with 2D barcode through GSC e-payment was introduced in cinemas (April 2011) and autogate facilities was installed in selected cinemas.
GSC AEON Bandaraya Melaka opened for business May 19, 2011.
GSC IOI Mall Puchong expanded to 10 screens on May 2011.
GSC Lite which embodies GSC’s cinema entertainment magic in a lighter, modest and accessible manner, is introduced to cater to smaller market centres without compromising the movie experience of its bigger counterparts.
