First THX Hall For East Malaysia
April 11, 2013
Kuching, Thurs (April 11)
Having made the first step into Sarawak with the opening of 8-screen GSC Bintang Megamall Miri earlier in February this year, leading cinema chain Golden Screen Cinemas Sdn Bhd (GSC) makes a quantum leap to Kuching, Sarawak with the opening of a 10-screen GSC CityOne Megamall today.
In the launch event today, Mr Irving Chee (GSC General Manager) said, “In February, GSC Bintang Megamall Miri marks the first GSC cinema in Sarawak (under the GSC Lite branding) which offers a lighter, modest and easily accessible cinema for markets like Miri. Coincidentally, this was the first all-digital cinema in East Malaysia and also in GSC chain. Today, we continue this winning trend with the opening of the first GSC cinema in Kuching, which happens to be the largest screen count in the state of Sarawak and comes equipped with the first THX hall in East Malaysia”.
He added, “With the total of 1876 seating capacity – inclusive of the 20 wheelchair space here in the 10-screen GSC CityOne Megamall, we hope to offer a better selection of movies for Kuching folks, and hopefully with a film festival or two for those with discerning taste in non-commercial foreign movies.”
THX-certification standard was first developed by Lucas Film in the early 1980s to address the problems of movie playback. The THX-certified halls undergo stringent criteria to ensure that the hall has minimum interference from facility noise, concession and adjacent auditorium. The equipment for the cinema is carefully selected for its performance level while the steps are taken to ensure a crisp, accurate cinema sound that is unaltered by excess reverberation. In addition, the viewing angles, projector placement and screen illumination that results in optimum picture presentation enhances the overall movie experience in the THX hall.
Both GSC and the Mall Management invested over RM29 million in GSC CityOne Megamall, Kuching.
Gracing the cinema launch event was Mr Stephen Long Tine Chung (Director, Kenbest Group), Mdm Sim Ewe Kee (Director, Kenbest Group) and Mr Heng Beng Fatt (GSC Deputy General Manager).
After GSC CityOne Megamall, GSC plans to open a 10-screen GSC Palm Mall, Seremban (Quarter 2, 2013) and a 11-screen GSC Nu Sentral, KL before year end. In 2014, GSC has already signed for GSC IOI City Mall, Putrajaya and GSC Aman Central, Kedah.
Online ticketing facility (GSC e-payment) for both internet and mobile purchases (Mobile app iPhone and Android) will be available in this latest GSC cinema, including the SelfPrint service and auto-gate features to ensure convenience to cinema-goers here.
In conjunction with the opening, the public can look forward to “Buy 2 Free 1” vouchers with ticket purchase at the ticketing counters, free GSC Eco-bag with each purchase of GSC Combo 3, fun on-ground activities like “Wind Chamber”, character walkabouts, balloon giveaways and more.
With GSC CityOne Megamall Kuching, GSC currently (as at April 11, 2013) has a total of 28 cinemas, 238 screens - out of which 117 are digital screens, total 43,336 seating capacity nationwide (including wheelchair spaces). GSC will go fully digital by 2014.
